25 Church Branding Myths Still Hanging Around
Back in 2001, we launched Be Known for Something from the old Krispy Kreme test-kitchen and marketing offices in Winston-Salem, NC. Mark MacDonald had just moved to the United States after serving as Senior Creative Director for one of eastern Canada’s largest advertising and branding agencies.
We started with one goal: help churches communicate clearly so their communities listen.
25 years later, the tools have changed, but the need for clarity hasn’t.
That’s why our anniversary year (2026) is a perfect moment to look back, laugh a little, and learn from what we’ve seen.

These myths keep churches frustrated. Pastors hear them all the time. Let’s put them to rest.
- Branding is just a logo
- “We don’t need a brand”
- Good design equals good communication
- Everyone is our audience
- A website is enough
- We can’t control reputation
- Clarity will limit us
- More content means more engagement
- You need a big budget
- Sermons communicate everything
- Consistency is optional
- Branding makes us too corporate
- A mission statement solves it
- Volunteers understand messaging
- Ministries should define their own look
- Strategy slows us down
- People don’t judge visuals
- Announcements fix attendance
- Facebook reaches everyone
- Rebrands are quick
- “We’ll know good design when we see it”
- Branding replaces evangelism
- Trends don’t matter
- Visual identity equals brand
- Clear messaging is restrictive
Breaking these myths frees churches to communicate with purpose.
As we celebrate 25 years of helping churches be known for something meaningful, these lists remind us how much ministry communication keeps shifting.
But clarity, strategy, and a strong Brand Thread keep cutting through the noise.
