25 Church Communication Mistakes We’ve Seen (And How to Avoid Them)

Back in 2001, we launched Be Known for Something from the old Krispy Kreme test-kitchen and marketing offices in Winston-Salem, NC. Mark MacDonald had just moved to the United States after serving as Senior Creative Director for one of eastern Canada’s largest advertising and branding agencies.

We started with one goal: help churches communicate clearly so their communities listen.

25 years later, the tools have changed, but the need for clarity hasn’t.

That’s why our anniversary year (2026) is a perfect moment to look back, laugh a little, and learn from what we’ve seen.

After working with hundreds of churches, we’ve seen patterns. These 25 church communication mistakes are fixable and create huge clarity wins when addressed.

  1. Overstuffed websites
  2. Ministry silos
  3. Every pastor using a different tone
  4. Logos with too many fonts
  5. Random social posts
  6. Sermon graphics without a central thread
  7. Long announcements
  8. Underusing email
  9. No audience research
  10. All-caps yelling
  11. Amateur event photography
  12. Ignoring first-time guests
  13. No clear next step
  14. Website menu overload
  15. Too much insider language
  16. Sermon series with confusing titles
  17. Forgetting the unchurched
  18. Treating volunteers like staff
  19. No follow-up plan
  20. Outdated homepages
  21. Inconsistent color usage
  22. Too many print pieces
  23. No metrics
  24. Reacting instead of planning
  25. No Brand Thread

Avoid these and your church becomes known for something meaningful rather than scattered content.
