25 Things Churches Should Stop Posting Immediately
Back in 2001, we launched Be Known for Something from the old Krispy Kreme test-kitchen and marketing offices in Winston-Salem, NC. Mark MacDonald had just moved to the United States after serving as Senior Creative Director for one of eastern Canada’s largest advertising and branding agencies.
We started with one goal: help churches communicate clearly so their communities listen.
25 years later, the tools have changed, but the need for clarity hasn’t.
That’s why our anniversary year (2026) is a perfect moment to look back, laugh a little, and learn from what we’ve seen.
These will feel painfully true. Shareable. And helpful.
- Sermon graphics with too much text
- Dark, grainy worship photos
- Staff selfies with no context
- Ministry flyers with 12 fonts
- Long event descriptions
- Last-minute announcements
- Posters turned into social posts
- The back of the worship leader’s head
- Birthday shoutouts to staff
- Out-of-focus kid photos
- Slides full of clipart
- Flyers without a call to action
- Video thumbnails with random screenshots
- Anything with Comic Sans
- Pulpit photos with no story
- Outdated event promos
- Unedited sermon ramblings
- Hyping an event that’s not that exciting
- Anything that’s about the church and not the congregation
- Vacation Bible School photos in December
- Event reminders three times a day
- Sermon graphics that all look different
- Asking “Guess what’s coming?”
- Social posts for only insiders
- Anything not connected to your Brand Thread
When churches simplify, strategy wins, and their voice becomes clear.
