4 Huge Branding Mistakes

I’m writing this on Father’s Day. I tend to be retrospective on this day. I think back about how I acted with my Dad; and how my kids act around me.

I’m blessed to have 2 great boys. As teens, I think they’re better kids than I ever was. But perhaps time warps my memories.

A lesson I didn’t learn till I was out of college was to admit a mistake. I hated admitting it when I was younger. It seemed so much easier to come up with an excuse. Now I realize that admitting a mistake is the first step to doing something better.

We have hundreds of clients. In the 25+ years of doing what I do, I’ve seen too many clients trying to do it themselves. And often, they don’t realize their errors. And will never admit it. They make excuses and keep doing things mediocre.

What are 4 Mistakes we see all the time?

  1. They focus on describing their products; rather than talking about their benefits. If you sell someone on the benefit of what they NEED; they’ll ask you how specifically you deliver it. That’s a better way to engage.
  2. They don’t listen to their clients. And worst yet, they don’t ask their clients questions. They assume that they know everything.
  3. They have a homemade logo. And then they wonder why their potential clients choose to go somewhere else. Logos need to be simple, professional, and instantly validate your business as a state-of-the-art, national-looking company. It’s worth the extra money. More…
  4. They don’t pinpoint an audience. Trying to reach everyone is the critical mistake that costs far too much. And will dilute your message to a point it doesn’t attract. More…

I wish I would have admitted mistakes more when I was young. I actually LOVE doing it now. If I’m not admitting it; I have to ask “am I perfect then?” or “am I not daring enough?” Try admitting your mistakes this week. You’ll be better off!
