25 Church Communication Mistakes We’ve Seen (And How to Avoid Them)
Back in 2001, we launched Be Known for Something from the old Krispy Kreme test-kitchen and marketing offices in Winston-Salem, NC. Mark MacDonald had just moved to the United States after serving as Senior Creative Director for one of eastern Canada’s largest advertising and branding agencies.
We started with one goal: help churches communicate clearly so their communities listen.
25 years later, the tools have changed, but the need for clarity hasn’t.
That’s why our anniversary year (2026) is a perfect moment to look back, laugh a little, and learn from what we’ve seen.
After working with hundreds of churches, we’ve seen patterns. These 25 church communication mistakes are fixable and create huge clarity wins when addressed.
- Overstuffed websites
- Ministry silos
- Every pastor using a different tone
- Logos with too many fonts
- Random social posts
- Sermon graphics without a central thread
- Long announcements
- Underusing email
- No audience research
- All-caps yelling
- Amateur event photography
- Ignoring first-time guests
- No clear next step
- Website menu overload
- Too much insider language
- Sermon series with confusing titles
- Forgetting the unchurched
- Treating volunteers like staff
- No follow-up plan
- Outdated homepages
- Inconsistent color usage
- Too many print pieces
- No metrics
- Reacting instead of planning
- No Brand Thread
